Mind Matters

In a column in today's Fort Myers News-Press, a psychologist described how demeaned he felt when a nurse at his doctor's office called him "dearie." I disagree with his assumption that he became a non-person to her. I think it is more a matter of linguistics. Women of a "certain age" (particularly in the South) oftentimes slip in these endearments without, I'd guess, even realizing they are doing it. I doubt they mean any disrespect. http://news-press.com
